Holmesian Scotland Yard bus doodles

I've been reading Sherlock Holmes fanfiction by Aragonite /[livejournal.com profile] karstcrystal lately; she's an author who writes excellent Holmes and Watson, but mostly focuses on the Inspectors, Constables and everyone (Canon or original) who works at Scotland Yard. Since reading her fics (which are instructive, character AND plot-based  and as funny as they can be a punch in the gut) is a guarantee of never looking at these characters the same way again, I once again found myself on the bus with time (one hour and fifteen minutes to work and back) on my hands as well as paper and a pencil. Oh, and now I can't think of other possible first names for Inspectors Lestrade and Bradstreet.

So, top left to bottom right: Roger Bradstreet, Geoffrey Lestrade, Stanley Hopkins and Tobias Gregson. Lestrade looks way too young and I was toying with a design for Hopkins that didn't work, but for a bus doodle it's not too shabby :o)

Another bus doodle. I did have Colin Jeavons in mind as a design, but it's been absolute years since I watched the Granada series and it shows. Plus, I can never make my drawings match the model :/

Yet another bus doodle. When Tobias Gregson is smiling like that, you know something bad is about/happening to somebody else.

Aaaand this one is a bus doodle that grew a bit. I have no idea what happened, but it's got Bradstreet stunned, Gregson in a grimly analytical mood, and Lestrade smiling. Not in a nice way at all.

I'm a bit disappointed, because that wasn't quite what I'd intended Lestrade to look like, and I'm not sure the bus' movements are entirely to blame.

Now, they're all unscathed alive and standing, at least. I'd love to see someone work up a story on that basis :D

If the images don't appear wholly, click right and on "Display picture" :o]

Huzzah for the background characters! XD And has anyone ever done a novel/series/film that focuses on Holmes through the eyes of the Scotland Yard Regulars? Because they should!

Not to my knowledge, but yes, they definitely should - Holmes seen through Watson's eyes is great to read, because he doesn't gloss over his flatmate's quirks and eccentricities, but the fondness shines through every line of the page; but as a narrator, he tends to step back and not say much about himself in the situation. Another point of view would show just how awesome he is :D Plus the Yard seem to view Holmes in a mixture of curiosity, annoyance and respect, so really it'd be interesting if done well :o)

There are teeny, weeny glimpses of it in 'Sherlock' sometimes...but Lestrade seems to be the only one who kinda, sorta likes Holmes.

So, I hereby propose that should either of us get into the novel/television/film business, we set about rectifying this immediately. :D

Oooh, you've seen Sherlock!! I've downloaded the series last summer, when I heard/read about it on TV Tropes, because I thought we'd never get it in France - I love this series, they're so well written and acted :o)

It's true that in the Canon (still re-reading the short stories :o) Lestrade is the only one beside Hopkins who actually seeks Holmes' assistance, and the only one, period, who drops in occasionally to discuss cases and whatnot. Have you read/seen "The Six Napoleons"? The ending is quite heartwarming, especially for Holmes :o)

I'll follow your lead into the novel/television/film business, my friend :D In the meantime, I'm working on a missing scene (still without a title) from "The Empty House"... writing on the bus is a drag, but it's a long ride and I gotta keep myself awake!

I adore 'Sherlock'. We get reruns every Friday at about the time I get home from work. ;)

"We're not jealous of you at Scotland Yard. No, sir, we are proud of you, and if you come down to-morrow there's not a man, from the oldest inspector to the youngest constable, who wouldn't be glad to shake you by the hand."
Methinks that line has something to do with the good Inspector popping up more frequently than the others in canon adaptations. Probably one of the most heartwarming moments in canon. After "Three Garridebs" of course.

Oh...that sounds intriguing. Do keep me posted.

I completely agree with you. And, oh, The Three Garridebs indeed... Funnily enough, the story and riddle in itself isn't the most fascinating (it reads a bit like Red-Haired League), but God, as a reader and a fan of sorts I feel entitled to run with this moment in canon and cherish it :D Reminds me (although it should be the other way around, really) of Lestrade's words to John in the first episode of Sherlock - "Because Sherlock Holmes is a great man, and I think one day — if we're very very lucky — he might even be a good one." Sums up the title character (of the 2010 series, anyway) pretty well :o)

This quote actually makes me wonder if this is why Lestrade drops in occasionally on Holmes and Watson, apart from letting Holmes keep in touch with the Yard and receive hints about cases, as well as for the pleasantness of their company. I mean, he's the only one apart from Watson who actually makes an effort.

You know, I really love those heartwarming moments in Garridebs and Napoleons (as well as the final paragraphs of The Yellow Face, with Grant Munro accepts his wife's black little girl), but I just happened on a good, if discreet one in The Bruce-Partington Plans that I don't think I have seen mentioned. For context, Holmes is about to engage in a break-in in order to have evidence he needs, and Watson has misgivings. When Holmes suggests he takes no active part in it, what is Dr. Watson's answer?

My answer was to rise from the table.
"You are right, Holmes. We are bound to go."
He sprang up and shook me by the hand.
"I knew you would not shrink at the last," said he, and for a moment I saw something in his eyes which was nearer to tenderness than I had ever seen. The next instant he was his masterful, practical self once more.

Bonus points for Holmes' next line being "Don't drop the instruments (among other things a jemmy and a chisel :D), I beg. Your arrest as a suspicious character would be a most unfortunate complication." Sherlock Holmes, king of snark :P

The story progresses, and I'll post it as soon as it's finished and proof-read and Brit-picked :o]
