Title:   Backup
Fandom: Life on Mars (pre-series)
Characters:  Chris Skelton, Ray Carling
Pairing: none
Rating
:  G
Genre: humour, a few ouchies, dialogue-only
Word Count:  200
Spoilers/Warnings:  having seen the finale of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes and knowing why Chris freezes in a shootout helps, but it's not spoileriffic.
Summary:  D.C. Ray Carling, P.C. Chris Skelton, and one guy with a gun - situation should be simple. It's not, though.
A/N: Wrote this one on the bus this morning, partly because I could see it playing out in my head and also because I wanted to know whether I could write dialogue-only LoM fiction. Up to you to decide whether the voices are recognisable :o)

“I don’t want to get shot.”

“Stay down, you div. He can’t get us if we stay here.”

“I don’t want to get shot.”

“You ain’t gonna. Radio Phyllis for backup. You’ll be safe ‘s long as you don’t do anything stupid.”

“Chris, what the bloody ‘ell’s got into you? Snap out of it, yeh twonk, it’s not that bad.”

“Don’t wanna die, Ray.”

“P.C. Skelton, wouldya stop being such a Nancy and call for backup already or so help me I’m gonna shoot you meself! Get d—

thud.

“Ray? Um, sir? Ray!

“P.C. Skelton ‘ere! Come in, sarge!”

“Desk Sergeant Dobbs.”

“Sarge, we need backup, corner of Cable Street an’ Grope Lane! Man down!”

“Sending the plod ASAP, love, hold on there. Who’s with ya?”

“D.C. Carling, sarge. Got shot.”

“Bad?”

“Hang on.”

“Is he alive, then?”

“A bit. Says I owe him a month’s worth of pints down at the Railway, sarge.”

“He’ll be fine, constable.”

“Thanks, sarge.”

Yeh’re a div, Chris. Ow.”

“Sorry, Ray.”

Can't speak to how close the voices were to the characters in the show, but they certainly had clear voices.

I really enjoyed this fic...and it makes me want to watch Life on Mars (and Ashes to Ashes actually...because I LOVE Keeley Hawes!)

Thanks for reading this, even if you don't know the fandom :o) Both shows are great, with a slightly different feel about them (which probably has got to do with the different time periods they're set in, and the fact that the main protagonists are a man for LoM and a woman for A2A). I strongly advise you to watch LoM first, because there's a lot that won't make sense if you go right over to A2A first. Besides, it's only got 16 episodes - A2A has 24 :o)

Tragically enough, Netflix has the American LoM to watch instantly, but not the British. So I'm going to have to find some other way to watch it. :-)
